Friday, July 9, 2021 is the ceremony celebrating the finalization of the land purchase for the Tiny Home Village for Veterans organized by the Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin. SAS is proud that through our Relieve the Distressed fundraising efforts, the funds raised by SAS will help pay for the construction cost of one of the Tiny Homes for Veterans to be built in Milwaukee. We are honored to be a part of this important event and to give back to all the veterans in need that have so bravely served our country.
The following is a Press Release from Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin:
Closing and Signing Ceremony for the New Tiny Home Village for Veterans
On Friday July 9th Alderwoman Chantia Lewis along with Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin (VOW) board members and several other prominent City Officials will be celebrating the closing signatures and launch of the Tiny Homes for Veterans on the city’s northwest side.
The VOW tiny homes development will be known as the Gary G. Wetzel Veteran Village; it will bring forty-eight new homes along with a community center to land located just west of N. 60th Street and Green Tree Road in the 9th Aldermanic District. After construction of the center and the first dozen or so homes our Veterans in need will able to start moving in this coming Spring/Summer of next year.
Each unit will be approximately 240 square feet, will include their own bed, storage space for the belongings, and more importantly somewhere they can call home again. The main community center will be 10,000 square feet and will house showers, bathrooms, a communal kitchen and several common areas for them for work and relax. It’s goal is to give our Veterans their own personal space while providing a common place where they can gather, socialize and receive the help they so desperately need.
The property sale and closing is scheduled to be at 10:00 am this coming Friday the 9th at the 3rd floor Vel R. Phillips Ante Chamber at City Hall, 200 E. Wells Street. Along with our city officials joining Alderwoman Louis for the ceremony will be the VOW Executive Director Brad Behing, and Board President Trevor Morgan. Department of City Development Commissioner Lafayette Crump is also expected to attend along with the bagpipers from the St. Andrew Society, which is graciously funding one of the new homes.
With them honored guest and Milwaukee native, U.S. Army Veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor Award Winner Gary G. Wetzel who the village is named after will also be in attendance.
Alderwoman Lewis stated “ As an 9/11 era U.S. Air Force Veteran, the Tiny Homes for Veteran’s project has been near to my heart. The gift of a home is priceless, and I know how easy it can be for those who serve to become homeless and lose hope. I see the sacrifices they have made for all of us and how critical it is for us to support those who have served so valiantly for our Country.”
