Our February Featured SAS Member is one of our current SAS Managers, Bruce Seeds. Bruce joined the Society in 2007 and has served as both a SAS Manager and Secretary where he brought our society into the technology age by setting up our emailing system, webpage and social media channels.
Though born in Florida, he grew up in Brookfield, attending UW-Madison before receiving his architecture degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Bruce is a proud member of Clan Donald thanks to his great great grandfather John R. MacDonald whose father William was born in borders of Scotland in Galashiels.
After college in 1983 Bruce moved to Texas where he practiced architecture, focusing primarily on computer-aided design applications. His computer skills led him to website design when he returned to Milwaukee in 2001. In 2008, he decided to try his hand at the mosaic quilt style after being inspired by Maxine Rosenthal's book "One Block Wonders." And there was no turning back. What makes his quilts so unique in the world of quilting is “it's the process not a pattern.”
When Bruce begins a quilt he starts with a unique bolt of fabric that embraces his love of color, to create his own unique artistic discovery he uses his own natural tendency towards precision and detail.
“These kaleidoscopic part of each quilt is cut from a single bolt of fabric. When I buy the fabric I have no idea what the resulting quilt will look like. The process moves in steps, and each step involves exploration and discovery. And each step builds on the previous one.”
